Inlays and Onlays
If your tooth’s biting surface is damaged, the doctors at Pacific Dental Group may recommend dental inlays and onlays as a conservative method of restoring your smile. Inlays and onlays can help reduce and remove sensitivity and tooth loss and are designed to give you a healthier and more appealing smile.
Dental inlays and onlays are made of porcelain, gold, or composite material. They are bonded to the damaged section of the tooth. An inlay, similar to a dental filling, is used inside the cusp tips of the tooth. An onlay extends out and over one or more of the cusps of your tooth and can be used when a complete crown is not necessary.
Inlays and onlays require two dental visits to complete. On your first visit, the doctor will begin by removing any old fillings, decay or damage found on the tooth. Then an impression is taken. Then the mold will be forwarded to the lab for fabrication. Finally, before you leave, the doctor will place a temporary sealant on the tooth and schedule you for another visit.
During your second appointment, the doctor removes the temporary sealant and checks the bite and fit of the inlay or onlay to ensure it fits properly. If the fit is satisfactory, the inlay or onlay is bonded to the tooth with an adhesive and the tooth will be polished to a smooth finish.
